A typical polder in the 'Groene Hart'. Habitat of Bufo bufo, Pelophylax esculenta, Lissotriton vulgaris and Rana temporaria. These soils are organic, i.e. largely consist of decayed plant material, thus forming floating peat mats. Houses, roads and other heavy constructions need a fundation of tall (>10 m) poles that penetrate deeper lying layers of sand and pebbles.

Another polder near Bodegraven. These wide ditches are full of fish but still harbour amphibians. Here we found marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), common toad (Bufo bufo) and common newt (Lissotriton vulgaris).

In 1993 a population of small pearl-bordered fritillary (Boloria selene) was introduced at small nutrient-poor peat meadows near de Meije after it had disappeared from the area years before. Nowadays (2010) a small population still exists.
