This is what the lakes in the delta look like, giving us a 'Dutch' feeling. This picture could as well have been taken in the Naardermeer, Nieuwkoopse Plassen or the Ankeveense Plassen.

Most numerous was the marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus), reaching giant proportions, like this one that measured nearly 17 cm from snout to anus.

Common spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus), common on the sandy planes outside the village. We happened to have a slight drizzle on the first night, that allowed us to find some specimens. Within the village this species is replaced by Green toad (Pseudepidalea viridis).

Notice the grains of sand blowing in the wind. This is the kind of environmental dynamics that is essential to the steppe runner. No blowing sand, no steppe runner.

The steppe runner inhabits these sandy dunes. Slightly further inland, where the sand is fixed by vegetation, it is replaced by the common sand lizard (Lacerta agilis chersonensis).

Here it is: lacerta agilis (subspecies chersonensis). Only a few specimens have the famous red back, but they all have ticks. This one has two ticks in its ear. The parasites may come from grazing cattle.
