With over a million inhabitants, Antalya is one of the largest cities in Turkey. Just outside the city you can start looking for Luschan’s salamanders.

A mating pair of Lyciasalamandra antalyana. The male and the female were found separately, but during a short captivity in a wet cotton bag, the male took the female on top of his body and took her in the right position with his front legs.

Mature males have a soft sting at the base of the tale, used for stimulation of the female cloaca. After impregnation the female gives birth to one or two completely metamorphosed juveniles. Normally amphibians need water for reproduction; Luschan’s salamanders are an exception to this rule.

Typical biotope of these salamanders: a dry pine forest on rocky karst; under the rocks small hollows occur.

Male Lyciasalamandra anatalyana. The big eyes are an adaptation to the darkness in their hiding places deep in caves and fissures during the summer.
